If I've heard it once, I've heard it a thousand times. "Nah, I'm not gonna [watch that movie/listen to that band/read that book/play that game] because it's too MAINSTREAM." What the hell are you even talking about?
One movie that got a shit load of hype was Avatar. I got sick of seeing the billboards, merchandise, commercials, the "extended releases", morons running around with facepaint, and all the internet jokes about it, saying the story wasn't that great and it wasn't that great of a movie because it's too cliche.
Finally, I pirated a copy of my own, 1080p 12GB big, and i watched that thing on my 27" widescreen monitor. I have this to say: I enjoyed it.
"OMG NO! That movie's too mainstream." Yeah, so fucking what? Did you enjoy watching the movie as you sat there in your imax theater with your dumbass 3D glasses on? I didn't even need all that and I can say I enjoyed watching it. I sure as shit am not gonna be some kind of fan twat and go buy shit loads of merchandise, change my online avatar to avatar, and start relating my life to scenes from avatar like half you morons do.
Yes, the movie was predictable, felt like I'd heard it before, and it was the story of dances with wolves (i don't know about pocahontas... i still don't see the relation. feels like more of a stretch to me). but it's not a bad story, and they did make it a fun trip through the same age-old story. some stated that the end battle is like return of the jedi with the ewok battle. nah. not really. the ewoks were big fuzzy teddy bear animatronics who threw rocks and adorably smacked at-st walkers with sticks. the avatar aliens (i don't know what they were called) were more like long-dredlocked lizard/dolphin-skin people with a true battle instinct and blood lust. yes, bad guys had planes, guns, and whatnot, but never once did any of that modern technology have to put food on the table, so all were used simply as the tools they were. that was the advantage these creatures had: the fighting experience.
i've thrown all your arguments off. it was still a decent movie to watch. full of wonder, great music, excellent voice acting, and awesome battle CGI. i found it quite enjoyable. if i saw it on hbo, i'd watch it again. quit finding reasons to hate it because it's got a lot of hype.
i also find people in dubstep rooms complaining that now dubstep is becoming mainstream. "psh, i can't listen to dubstep anymore. now it's too mainstream." if you liked dubstep beforehand, why wouldn't you like it now? it only proves that you don't actually like anything: you're just trying too hard to prove to everyone that you're an individual or some such bullshit. dubstep is awesome, no doubt. but just because skrillex wants to do a song with korn doesn't mean you should now denounce dubstep. you can't just pass dubstep around on soulseek forever. these artists have to achieve exposure to sell more albums and get better equipment to make even better dubstep tracks. don't complain until you see your dubstep artists drinking a coke and smiling as he/she poses for the camera and twinkles their eye.
It's like these harry potter wad-wastes that read the book, then go in and see the movie, then walk out complaining that it wasn't as good as the book. it wasn't trying to be the book, and if it was, you'd be sitting there longer than lord of the rings.
pull out the good shit, CGI it up, and enjoy it. was it a fun journey? did it make you laugh, jump, cry, and everything else like a movie should?
whether you like harry potter or not, the movies are quite good... that is, if you can muster the balls to actually walk in and watch one without someone thinking you're a "mainstreamer".
the new star trek movie... i have friends who are loyalists to the "original story" and don't mind sitting through all the shitty episodes of voyager, but can't watch 1 90 minute movie. "they change everything, and it's not what Gene Roddenberry had in mind!" gene roddenberry didn't have voyager in mind neither, and you morons still ate it up. roddenberry also wasn't around for half of the next generation either, and you still enjoyed it. you don't care if it's "his original vision" or not. you're just stating some noble statement that's only noble to you and retarded to the rest. if it's an enjoyable movie, go watch it, and stop trying to concentrate on whether or not it's "good enough" for your microcosm of things you have to have proven to you. pick the damn thing up and watch it. you wanna complain about it being a bad movie, pick things that are actually bad about it like acting, effects, pacing, story (regardless of what universe it's in). can the movie stand on its own? that's how to be a critic.
there comes a point where you have to remember that you don't care if someone thinks you're a mainstreamer: you weren't put here to make sure everyone else is pleased and impressed with you. enjoy whatever the hell you personally want to enjoy and stop letting everyone else dictate your damn life for you.
having said that, NO, i will not watch twilight. haven't even given it a chance. i've played legacy of kain, watched john carpenter's vampires, watched and read interview with the vampire, played bloodrayne 1 and 2, watched all the underworld movies, enjoyed the original buffy the vampire slayer movie, and can honestly say i enjoyed watching queen of the damned even if i can also admit the movie was a shitpile. (guilty pleasure for me, but definitely a shitty movie. whatever, i like nu metal). i even made it through the first 2 seasons of true blood with absolutely no interest in watching the third, or any others.
speaking of true blood, let me briefly review it: it's mediocre. the main character is a telepathic girl named sooki stackhouse. yes, sooki. it takes place in louisiana, so they all call her suckie. maybe just her looks, because she's the same redneck ugly bitch from x-men and fly away home. buck broken teeth, generally mindless, and terrible at acting. why is she the main character again? her character is boring, her vampiric boyfriend is boring, the whole fucking thing is boring. the only time it picks up is when people start fucking, and even then it's normally sooki's brother getting it done. softcore porn is great, but enough the fuck already. they portray vampires as hippies trying to be accepted, as superiority-complexed megalomaniacs, and sex-crazed nymphos. wonderful. i noticed a big switch between season 1 and 2. sooki got sluttier, and they wouldn't shut the hell up with this demon chick who needed to die within 3 episodes, not 12.
there, now with all that said, i have my knowledge of vampires, and don't necessarily hate vampire novels nor movies nor games. i hate twilight. it's bullshit.
there will come a day when i officially review everything wrong with that movie, and that'll be when i can muster the willpower to start the damn thing, let alone sit through it. from what i've read about it, it's beyond emo and beyond enjoyable. i will break this movie down into everything as to why it actually sucks and morons won't accept it.
"Hey Hylianux, you made fun of eminem, which is pop and mainstream by definition. you also like nu metal, which is mainstream as hell!"
correction: WAS mainstream. not only that, I listen to the nu metal groups that nobody's heard of that was actually good and not a bunch of pussies getting on stage and crying about how much they hate their ex girlfriend for not loving their pussy ass. Here, let me name a few: static-x, korn, dope, skindred, ill nino. (yes, i know korn was popular, but seeing as they were the originators of the genre, they laid the groundwork for it all, and thus are more of the musical mentor, not the pop puppet like most of the others.)
i hate eminem because he sucks. he doesn't rap "from the heart." bitch boy rapper complains all the time, whining about how "it's just the way i am" and "i hate my momma" and "lose yourself!" meanwhile trying to shock everyone with violent-intended lyrics that say "i'm a criminal" and "imma shoot a puppy" and "imma rape my mother" and "imma kill my wife, bleed bitch bleed". nice try. you still sound like pop's bitch. you have absolutely no backing to anything you're saying; it's all empty anger for the sake of being evil or angry because it sells. let's also not forget you're on MTV, the station that makes no-talent fuckheads like rebecca black and tila tequila popular, and is more focused with selling shit than actually showing music videos of decent artists. welcome to youtube: the new MTV
"well, POP is mainstream, and you seem to hate it." i don't hate all pop. i can actually enjoy utada hikaru just fine, for instance (great voice without the need for auto-tune, despite being japanese she has exceptionally beautiful english, and she's hot, if only she didn't have obsessions with 34-year-old fuck-toothed japanese guys... she got PROBLEMS there people, trust me.) but yes, i hate almost all american pop music. i like the old school shit like whodini, will smith, parliament, midnight star, positive k, and michael jackson. Let's take a look at today's pop tops:
this is the face of today's pop music. It's a wonder I'm still able to walk outside!
Yeah, I'm gonna stick with nu metal if that's all the better it gets. And I can enjoy it without worrying about any of you morons going "oh that's so mainstream." I like it, it sounds good, and I don't care whether a bajillion other people think so or don't think so. This shit's my music.
Wouldn't it be nice if more people could be like me and not be afraid to actually enjoy things they like? oh wait, nevermind, being like ME is too mainstream now.
